In memory of our son Declan Alexander we have created a nonprofit organization called It's No Monkey Business. We distribute gift baskets and mom-to-mom advice as a way to support other families experiencing life in the neonatal intensive care unit. Having a premature baby or a baby with medical complications is stressful enough but some families, like ours, are separated for a long period of time while one parent cares for their sick baby.
As a mom who spent 65 days at the bedside of my micro-preemie, living in the Ronald McDonald House while my husband cared for our two other children at home, I want to offer support and advice to other moms who find themselves in a situation similar to what we faced. I had a group of fabulous nursing staff who mentored me through loving my baby while in the NICU. Based on this experience, in my own words, I wrote the Mom-to-Mom Advice you will find in each basket.
Loving your baby from the NICU is a frightening, sometimes intimidating and lonely situation to be in. I want to ease some of those difficult feelings and my hope is that with our baskets it can be accomplished.
Our baskets go primarily to Freeman Hospital in Joplin, Missouri to families with an anticipated NICU stay of four weeks and longer but we have delivered baskets to hospitals in Missouri, Arkansas, and Oklahoma by request.
We are proud to announce we have expanded our project in 2009!
In the Spring of 2009 we began distributing our Monkey Brochures to families with premature babies born prior to 30 weeks gestation in Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri.
November 7, 2009 we made our first delivery to the Willow Creek Women's Hospital in Fayetteville, Arkansas!
We collect specific items that we feel help parent(s) while they love and care for their baby in the NICU. Items we collect are arranged and delivered to the NICU at Freeman West Hospital in Joplin, Missouri where our son was cared for by their amazing staff.
A list of items needed can be found by going to Make a Donation.
We also want to create a space for you to share your NICU experiences by celebrating your NICU graduate or honor your baby's memory.
Share your NICU story with us and we will include it in our Monkey Moms page. You may also send us your baby's prayer request to include in our Sending out Monkey Prayers page.
